During the week of July 17th to 21st, CAE will be operating with limited staff to answer calls and emails. While we have made arrangements to ensure minimal disruption to our services, there may be a slight delay in our response times. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.

The CAE will work closely with you to identify reasonable accommodations. You will have the opportunity to submit information to the CAE through the student application. You can submit any medically related information to support the assessment process. Then, if eligible, you will meet with one of our Disability Specialists to complete an intake. Both you and the Disability Specialist will work together to solidify your academic accommodations. Lastly, the Disability Specialist will review how to request accommodation’s every quarter, use the Student Portal, and all other pertinent information.

Step 1

Completing the CAE Academic Accommodations Application

We always encourage you to apply early! Typically, applications can take up to 2 weeks to review. During busier peak times such as Fall quarter, applications can take 3-4 weeks to review. If you are a student with a temporary disability (ex. concussion, broken bone, surgery, etc.), we will do our best to expedite your application to be reviewed faster.

We do NOT meet with students for intake appointments during Week 10 or Finals week. Applications submitted during Week 10 or Finals Week will typically be considered for the following quarter.

After review, if you are invited to schedule an intake appointment with a CAE Disability Specialist, you will be able to see your CAE Disability Specialist's availability for scheduling. If you have any scheduling concerns at that point, please email your CAE Disability Specialist.

If you have been registered with the CAE or had CAE accommodations in the past, there is no need to re-apply for accommodations. DO NOT submit an application. Instead, please email your CAE Disability Specialist directly and let them know that you are in need of accommodations. Step 2

Submit supporting documentation of disability and functional limitations

Documentation is encouraged, but not always required. For observable/visible disabilities, documentation may not be required. To submit documentation:

  • You can upload along with your application
  • Ask your medical provider fax your documentation to 310-825-9656
  • Email to caeintake@saonet.ucla.edu

If you do not currently have documentation, please ask your medical provider (Ex. physician, therapist, psychiatrist, etc.) to fill out our Verification of Disability form.

Step 3

Schedule an intake appointment with your CAE Disability Specialist

You will work with your CAE Disability Specialist to explore what accommodations may be reasonable through an interactive process. During the intake appointment, your CAE Disability Specialist will ask questions to better understand your accommodation requests, how CAE can support you, and determine your approved accommodations. Lastly, if approved for accommodations, your CAE Disability Specialist will review how to request accommodations, how to use the CAE Student Portal, and other pertinent information.

Step 4

Student Portal: Request Accommodation Letters

Through the CAE Student Portal, request that your accommodation letter be viewable in the online Faculty Portal for each of your instructors.

Frequently Asked Questions

When I should contact the CAE to discuss my disability and request accommodations?

Typically, applications can take up to 2 weeks to review. During busier peak times such as Fall quarter, applications can take 3-4 weeks to review. We do NOT meet with students for intake appointments during Week 10 or Finals week, and applications submitted during Finals week will not be considered until after.

Therefore, it is important to request accommodations as early as possible at the start of each course to allow ample time for the coordination of services. We recommend that letters are issued within the first two weeks of the start of each course and that students confirm accommodation logistics, such as specific testing arrangements, early in the term and again one week before each exam. Accommodation requests made on short notice will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis but cannot be guaranteed.

Will I have the same accommodations I had in high school or previous College/University?

Accommodations and services are determined on a case-by-case basis and dependent on a student’s current functional limitations and the fundamental elements of each course. It is possible that students may be approved for the same, or similar, services at each school they attend. The University is not required to make academic adjustments that would substantially change the fundamental nature of the program, so an accommodation that may have been appropriate in another setting may not be approved at UCLA.
